AI Engineer at Charity Navigator (Remote, USA)
Charity Navigator is hiring an AI Engineer to build LLM features that help donors make sense of nonprofit data. It’s a full-time remote job USA applicants can do from home, and it pays $105,000 to $125,000 a year.
That’s the question this team wants to answer well. You’d build the AI features that give donors a clear, sourced answer instead of a spreadsheet.
$105,000 to $125,000 / yearFully remote. United States only.
About this AI Engineer job
Charity Navigator is the largest independent nonprofit evaluator in the world. It looks at a charity’s financial health, accountability, transparency and impact, then publishes data on more than 245,000 nonprofits for free. It’s a 501(c)(3) public charity itself, so it runs on support from individuals, companies and foundations.
The role is simple to describe. You’d ship LLM-powered and agentic features on top of 2.4 million nonprofit profiles so searching, comparing and understanding them gets easier. It’s application-layer work. The engineering team already owns the data pipelines, so your time goes into the AI features people actually use.
You’d report to the VP of Engineering and work with senior engineers on system design and technical direction. You own AI features from day one, get regular design reviews and hands-on help with the harder architecture calls, and take on more of that architecture as you build depth in production AI.
What you’ll be working on
- Building production LLM and agentic features, covering prompt orchestration, tool calling, embeddings and structured outputs. They want reusable components, not one-off fixes.
- Putting together API integrations, MCP servers and RAG workflows that connect existing data to vector search, so the AI explains published ratings accurately and cites the source of every figure.
- Running evaluation infrastructure: prompt regression tests, LLM-as-a-judge checks and synthetic datasets that catch quality drops before users notice.
- Watching features in production for accuracy, latency, token cost and hallucination rates, then tuning prompts based on what you see.
- Adding runtime guardrails that keep outputs inside quality, compliance and operational limits.
- Researching orchestration frameworks, vector stores and model providers, and weighing cost and upkeep against speed. Build-versus-buy decisions are made with the VP of Engineering.
- Talking to non-technical colleagues to scope problems and telling them honestly what AI can and can’t do.
- Trying new models and tools, using AI-assisted development, and helping lift engineering standards through code review.
What they’re looking for
Experience and education
About 2 to 3 years building or deploying machine learning models or AI-driven applications. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, AI/ML or a related field is preferred, and a relevant certificate program counts. Real technical skill and industry experience can stand in for a formal degree.
Must have
- Python and ML basics: 2+ years of Python (professional or solid project work), a good grip on core machine learning ideas, and API integration experience.
- LLM and agentic systems: hands-on time with providers like Anthropic and OpenAI, prompt engineering, and agent patterns using LangChain, LlamaIndex or the Model Context Protocol.
- Retrieval and data work: practical experience querying and tuning a vector database such as pgvector or OpenSearch for RAG apps.
Nice to have
- Managed cloud AI services, with Amazon Bedrock preferred.
- Serverless or container deployments on AWS.
- Scrum or other Agile experience.
- A cloud, GenAI or ML certification, such as AWS Certified Generative AI Developer, Machine Learning, or Solutions Architect.
How the team likes to work
- You learn fast when a problem is new and find another route when the obvious one is blocked.
- You’re direct and honest, keep your commitments, and own your mistakes.
- You’re fine with fuzzy requirements. You raise open questions early and bring options instead of guesses.
- You can explain AI to people who don’t build it, and turn their problems into a technical scope.
- You ask for feedback, act on it quickly, and are comfortable saying “I don’t know yet” before going to find out.
